Since its foundation in 1904 IF Elfsborg has competed in top flight football during over 70 seasons, winning the league six times and the cup three times.

In 1904 a number of young men joined together to form what would eventually become known as IF Elfsborg. In 1926 the team made its debut in the Swedish top flight, Allsvenskan. A mere ten years later, during the season of 1935/36, the team won its  first league title. This was quickly followed by titles in 1938/39 and 1939/40.

In 1961 the team re-entered the top flight after a couple of years in a lower division and the team went on to win Allsvenskan as newcomers. This was the first time any team had managed that feat.

Having been through a bit of a rough patch during the late eighties and the early nineties IF Elfsborg returned to Allsvenskan again in 1997 and has since then become a major force in Swedish football. The team clinched the cup trophy in 2001 and 2003 but it would take of few more years before the league was won again.

In July 2005 the first game was played at Borås Arena and with the construction of the new stadium a new era started. In 2006 IF Elfsborg ended a 45-year wait for the next league triumph. Beginning that season IF Elfsborg earned seven consecutive medals in the domestic league, topping it off with the sixth league title in 2012. In 2014 yet another title was won as the team were crowned cup winners.

IF Elfsborg has not just got a good first team, the club also runs a successful youth academy with several teams taking part in a number of nationwide youth leagues. IF Elfsborg also takes pride in its social and community work, supporting for example an all girls home in Garissa, Kenya.
